Standing Together in the Face of Wildfire: COBS Bread Governor’s Market’s Inspiring Community Support

In the last few days, we have seen emergency evacuations ordered for the people of West Kelowna, British Columbia and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, as wildfires impact local communities and firefighters from across the country work tirelessly to save homes.

In response to the impact of the recent wildfire, COBS Bread Governor’s Market in West Kelowna, has been working directly with local emergency services and evacuation centres to support affected communities.

For the past week, franchisees Greg and Rebecca have been giving away free products to evacuees that visit the bakery, as well as donating leftover products to emergency shelters, services and food banks in the local community, all while keeping their doors open to the wider community. The donated products have been used in barbeques at evacuation centres and distributed to those impacted by the natural disaster.

“We have donated over $10,000 worth of products to assist wildfire relief efforts in the local community. We are proud to be part of the community and give back however we can during these difficult times. Our thoughts are with the people of West Kelowna and the many other communities across Canada navigating the devastating effects of wildfires and other extreme weather events this past year,” says Greg.

This instinct to come support the community is a trait of all COBS Bread bakery owners. Community giving is at the heart of COBS Bread’s values; it’s a part of the business model that at the end of the day, all bakeries donate leftover products to local charities in their communities. In addition, the West Kelowna bakery raised funds for the Central Okanagan Food Bank during COBS Bread’s “Doughnation Day” campaign this year.
